The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, yesterday said the vision of rebuilding the country and putting it on the path of progress and prosperity is possible if the state is able to attract the best talents to join the civil service.
The governor stated this at a strategic retreat for Heads of Services (HOS) of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta States under the auspices of the BRACED Committee at the John Odigi Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, Edo State.
The objective of the retreat was to promote excellence in both the public and private sectors while equipping participants in the six states of the South-South region with the skills needed to develop action plans for the betterment of the region.
Obaseki, who is the BRACED committee chairman, while declaring open the two-day strategic retreat, said the retreat would reshape the trajectory of efficient public service delivery in the region.
He said the retreat highlighted the problem of how to rebuild the country through institutions and bureaucracy at the local, state and federal levels, a goal he said could be achieved by ensuring the best talent comes from the civil service.
He said: “During my final year at the University of Ibadan, the federal civil servants and civil servants from other states came to the institution to recruit the best. That is where the public and the civil service came into play because it had high-quality people at that time.”
