A 350-year-old bronze statue of Atlas atop the Dam Square palace was temporarily freed of its burden on Monday when a globe was lowered back to the ground in the next phase of a massive renovation.
Atlas, who was punished for challenging Zeus by holding up the heavens, is a well-known theme in Greek mythology. Its representation is part of several statues on the roof of the former town hall, which need restoration.

The Atlas Globe in the palace is based on a clay model made by Artus Quirinus in 1650. This is not the first time the globe has needed repair. More than a hundred years ago, the columns supporting the Atlas Globe were in danger of collapsing and the globe itself had several cracks.
