Mexico- A tank explosion at a tequila factory in Tequila, Jalisco state, in western Mexico, killed at least two people, injured two and left five missing, Red Cross and emergency ministry spokesmen said on Tuesday, civil protection and state firefighters reported.
According to the first reports, two people died at the scene, one of them was transferred to a clinic in the city of Guadalajara with burns in a serious condition, and the other is in good health, the Jalisco Red Cross reported.
Meanwhile, Jalisco state civil protection and firefighting teams reported they were conducting a preliminary search for five people reported missing.
Local authorities are investigating to determine whether the victims worked at the tequila company or if they were visitors to the factory that produces the Mexican beverage, which is attractive to Mexican and foreign tourists.
According to the version, the explosion originated in a boiler, causing one of the tanks (stillers where the juice of the agave plant ferments) to fly into the street, causing damage to a hotel in the city center and causing a powerful explosion. A fire broke out inside the José Cuervo company, which spread to three containers with a capacity of 219,000 liters.
City and state firefighters and agents from the Mexican army evacuated factory workers and were working to put out the fire. Mayor José Alfonso Magallanes asked people not to approach the area after the incident.
They said the fire was under control but they were still looking for weak links and forensic experts were on site to determine the cause of the explosion, which was apparently caused by thermal management.
In total, four containers were on fire and the fire was spreading to another area with containers, but they managed to put it out.
The event takes place a day before the tequila industry marks International Tequila Day on July 24, established to spread knowledge of the production process and encourage the consumption of this iconic drink of Mexican culture. Efe/LB
