Astronomers try to calculate the number of galaxies with approximate sizes and maximum masses

Although they have confirmed that no more than 3% of the universe can be observed, astronomers are trying to estimate the number of galaxies in the universe using two methods that rely on ideas about the approximate size of the universe and the most massive galaxy structure, suggesting that this knowledge can provide a rough estimate of the number of galaxies that exist.

Scientists say the universe is estimated to be 13.8 billion years old, and because outer space has been expanding in all directions over that time, it should now have a total extent of 46 billion light-years, BNA reported.

The scientists added that after determining the upper and lower limits on galaxy masses, there could be 1 to 2 trillion galaxies in the universe.

Astronomers also used a second method based on data from the 2021 New Horizons spacecraft, which collected information on the total amount of light in different parts of the sky and thus estimated the number of galaxies needed to emit light of this intensity. Live Science.

Scientists say that based on New Horizons data, there may be a hundred times fewer galaxies in the universe than the first study suggested, which put the number at between 20 and 100 billion.
