Assange is expected to reach a plea deal with U.S. prosecutors tomorrow, according to which Assange has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to obtain and disclose classified U.S. defense documents.
WikiLeaks previously reported that Assange had been released from a British prison and left the UK after US prosecutors said he would plead guilty this week to violating US espionage laws.
The Australian journalist was initially arrested in Britain in 2010 at the request of Swedish authorities on rape charges which were later dropped.
He hid out in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he remained for seven years, to avoid extradition to Sweden and, ultimately, the United States.
He was forcibly taken from the Ecuadorian embassy in 2019. Since then, he has been held in London’s maximum-security Belmarsh prison, where he has been fighting extradition to the United States for nearly five years.
