The Department of Public Works, the Weather Service and Transportation are advising the public to conserve water as impending dry weather could affect water supplies in the coming months.
Fiji’s Climate Minister Ro Filipe Tuisavo said climatically, Fiji has two distinct seasons.
He said the rainy season lasts from November to April and the dry season lasts from May to October.
He said Fiji is currently in the dry season and weather stations are recording very little rainfall.
Current status:
Tuisavou said rainfall recorded in the past three months indicated Fiji was in the dry season with rainfall well below the normal monthly average.
As a result, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has released information on several reservoirs that are currently at critical levels.
The current dry period is expected to last for at least two months and the Ministry is working closely with relevant ministries and key sectors such as tourism, health and education to monitor the situation, develop necessary measures to mitigate the impact and keep the public informed.
“We urge all residents to conserve water during this time to ensure available resources can meet the basic needs of everyone across the country.”
“Simple measures such as reducing water use for non-essential activities, fixing leaks and reusing water wherever possible can make a noticeable difference.”
WAF will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed. In the meantime, the ministry is working with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to supply water to affected areas, including maritime communities.
