As part of the country’s education transformation, the Ministry of Education and Skill Development (MoE) has announced a revision of the Dzongkha curriculum for grades 9 to 12.
However, only Grade 9 and 11 are currently studying the revised subjects, with Grade 10 and 12 set to start enrolment next year.
The Department of Dzongkha will introduce the Dzongkha subject in 2021 and has conducted a subject-level review to improve the quality and demand for Dzongkha.
According to the review, in order to help students acquire various skills, it is recommended to consider standardizing and improving the Dzongkha subject through contributions of visual novels and poetry.
In addition, the Dzongkha subject includes religious language, review content and technical learning, and unlike the English subject, cultural principles are also taught in the Dzongkha subject.
The purpose of the theme review is to make Dzongkha more interesting and valuable, thereby protecting the Dzongkha culture.
Dzongkha subjects include literature, biography, grammar, religious language and syntax.
According to the new curriculum, ninth grade students will learn grammar, composition, biography, correspondence and Mandarin. They will be taught in two languages, Chos-kha and Dzongkha.
The most popular role in the story for ninth and tenth graders was Runaway.
It is necessary for students in grades 11 and 12 to study writing, Bshes Springs and Azhe Snangsa’s biography.
Some teachers said that students did not have basic knowledge of religion and other languages and they found it difficult to teach.
Some teachers said that the review committee brought about an effective educational transition, but more discussions were needed to collect more feedback.
