While some of the winning works were unexpected, the top prize, the Mayor’s Award of $50,000, was won by a vintage painting that resembled the model. Artist Studio Brisbane painter Imogen Corbett depicts her art teacher and muse Natalya Hughes.

Chief judge Bree Pickering, director of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, said Corbett’s portraits were joyful, approachable and well-made.
“The painting is beautifully composed and celebrates the beauty of the colour, pattern and texture of the fabric, but the subject is central and has a striking expressiveness,” Pickering said.

The Brisbane Portrait Prize is open to artists and models with a connection to Brisbane.
This year’s shortlist includes rugby league legend Wally Lewis, Girl and Girl frontman Kai James, outgoing Queensland Ballet director Leanne Benjamin, media personality Jamie Dunn and Australian Gardening Host Hannah Moloney.
Brisbane Portrait Prize Finalists Exhibition It will be held at the State Library of Queensland from August 3 to November 10. Admission is free.
