Hip replacement surgery target diseases

Hip osteoarthritis is the most common disease that requires hip replacement surgery. In Japan, most cases are caused by developmental dysplasia of the hip (so-called congenital hip dislocation or acetabular dysplasia), in which the top of the hip joint is shallow. Another type of osteonecrosis is femoral head necrosis, which is known to occur due to excessive drinking or as a side effect of steroids. When hip problems become severe, hip replacement surgery is a good option. However, if the degree of disability is mild or the patient is relatively young (under 50 years old), osteotomy is recommended if possible.
