Some 16,000 amateur butchers were injured in Turkey on Sunday, the first day of Eid al-Adha, Islam’s biggest festival, the country’s health minister said.

Muslims around the world celebrate the holiday to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son at God’s request before an angel stopped him and offered a ram instead.

During the celebration, believers sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep, and offer some of the meat to those in need.

Minister Fahrettin Koca announced on the social network X: “On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, nearly 16,000 people were injured during the sacrifice process in medical centers across the country.”

According to official data, nearly 30,000 people were injured during Turkey’s four-day celebrations in 2023.

“The reason for these situations is that the sacrifices are not carried out by professionals,” Koca declared, asking those who have not yet slaughtered the animals to be cautious.
