For 53 years, France, through Orano (formerly Areva), has mined uranium in Niger to meet 19% of its needs for 56 nuclear power plants. These facilities guarantee a stable supply of electricity to the French and enable France to sell electricity to other European countries.
However, the town of Arlit, where uranium is mined, suffers daily power outages, affecting all sectors, including health. Of the 6 MW of electricity provided to Arlit, 4 MW goes directly to Somaïr, a subsidiary of Orano.
