This evening at 7pm the Valletta Dominican Friars will present an organ concert by Christian Alejandro Almada at the Parish Church of St Dominic in Valletta. Almada is the a cappella master and organist at the Cathedral of St Paul outside Rome.

Almada will open the concert on the newly restored 200-year-old organ with Giuseppe Caruana’s “Ode to St. Dominic of Carraroga.” He will play works by classical composers such as Bach and Marcel Dupre, a leading composer of early 20th century organ music.

Almada’s concert was organized at the initiative of Malta’s ambassador to the Vatican, Frank Zammit, who recommended that the Argentinian conductor give a concert in the Basilica of St. Dominic, a parish established on July 2, 1571, by direct decree of Pope Pius V.

The parish was dedicated to Our Lady of Safe Haven, as many sailors, when they returned safely to port after a long and dangerous sea voyage, used to go to the chapel built by the Dominicans before the construction of the church to give thanks to Our Lady. St. Dominic Parish was also declared the principal parish church of the city.

Almada plans to give five organ concerts in churches across Malta in the summer of 2025.

Admission to today’s Valletta concert is free.
