The Football Association has demanded that West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta be banned for life for breaking betting rules.
“It is suspected that the player influenced the collection of a card during a match, believing that multiple parties would benefit from it,” the union’s complaint said.
Paqueta did not respond to the allegations until yesterday and a special committee is now reviewing the case.
Paqueta was accused of deliberately receiving yellow cards in a match against Leicester City in 2022 and against Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth in 20223.
Now the newspapers say that sixty people have placed bets on this on a small island in Brazil where Paqueta comes from, and people have placed bets of between one thousand and seventy thousand. These people and groups associated with Paqueta have won 17 million Icelandic kronor.
Betway, West Ham United’s main sponsor at the time, first reported that an unusually large number of bets were coming from the same area.
