ANZ Bank Fiji restructuring could lead to strike

Fiji TownANZ Fiji employees are about to Vote on whether to strike over restructuring They believe this may lead to unemployment.

The restructuring plan, called Program Enable, will transfer many of the bank’s back-office jobs to its Fiji-based subsidiary, Quest Ltd.
Fiji Banking and Finance Employees Union national secretary Pramod Rae said:

“It is ironic that existing staff who have been doing these jobs at ANZ Fiji and other Pacific Island countries for many years are not being allowed to transfer their jobs from ANZ to Quest.”

“This move was an elaborate tax avoidance scheme designed to significantly reduce ANZ Fiji’s staffing costs while avoiding paying Fijian tax.”

At the same time, ANZ Bank Fiji is also preparing to launch A host of new fees for customersThis has led to calls for the establishment of a banking ombudsman to monitor Fiji’s banks. The Dean of the School of Economics at the University of the South Pacific, Dr Biman Prasad, said the banking ombudsman would monitor customer complaints and provide an independent assessment of the increase in fees and charges.

“Fiji Bank’s profitability continues to rise but this has not resulted in a reduction in fees and charges which have continued to increase.” Dr. Prasad said.
