“This issue was raised by the Pahang royal family. You broke the rules and said the wrong thing, now you have to deal with it.

(FMT) – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has warned against politicising sedition charges against Muhyiddin Yassin, saying his government does not stand for it.

The government has again distanced itself from sedition charges against Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim saying it launched an investigation following a complaint from the Pahang state palace.

“This issue was raised by the Pahang royal family. You broke the rules and said the wrong thing, now you have to deal with it.

“Don’t politicise this. I will not respond and I have told my ministers to take the matter (to the courts).”

Anwar gave brief answers to reporters during a break in an event.

Yesterday, government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil insisted that the sedition charge against Muhyiddin was not initiated by Putrajaya, saying the investigation was triggered by a report submitted to the police by a representative of the royal family in Pahang state.

He said the former prime minister’s sedition case was similar to the case faced by Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Noor, both of which were filed following a police report lodged by the Selangor palace.

On Tuesday, Muhyiddin was on trial at the Gua Musang Magistrate’s Court, charged with making seditious remarks at a lecture on the eve of the recent Ngili by-election.

According to the charge sheet, the Perikatan Nasional chief questioned why he was not invited by then-King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to be sworn in as prime minister after the 15th general election despite having the support of 115 MPs.

Muhyiddin’s comments resulted in 50 police reports being lodged against him. The Pagoh MP was also reprimanded by the Pahang state palace.

Yesterday, Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin denounced Anwar and Pakatan Harapan leaders as hypocrites for using the Sedition Act against Muhyiddin, even though they had previously opposed the act and vowed to repeal it once in power.
