French media reported that Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France.
Reports said that Durov, 39, was detained by agents from the French Anti-Fraud Office after arriving at an airport north of Paris on Saturday evening (24th) local time on a private plane from Azerbaijan.
Sources close to the case said that France’s agency responsible for preventing violence against minors had previously issued an arrest warrant for Durov on suspicion of fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime and propaganda for terrorism. Durov is suspected of failing to take action to curb criminals’ use of Telegram.
Durov was born in Russia. In addition to Telegram, he also founded VKontakte (VK), a social networking site known as the Russian version of Facebook (fb). After he refused the Russian government’s request to close the opposition community on VK, he left Russia in 2014 and sold VK. Foreign media reported that Durov became a French citizen in 2021.
Durov, who Forbes estimates is worth $15.5 billion (HK$120.9 billion), has said he has been pressured by some governments but stressed that Telegram should remain neutral and not a geopolitical player.
