Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, was plunged into darkness on Monday night after an almost complete blackout of the interconnected power grid. The blackout was caused by the sudden shutdown of two transmission lines connecting the Andekaleka hydroelectric power plant to the Antananarivo network. Jirama has not yet specified the exact cause of the incident, but said that technicians from the high-voltage department are working to restore power. She promised that normal power supply will be gradually restored in the coming hours.
The Ambodivona substation has been out of service since the afternoon due to a break in a high voltage cable. The cable connects the Ambohimanambola interconnection station to the Ambodivona substation. The communities served by the substation have been without power for several hours.
