The Data Protection Authority (APD) asked Meta to clarify the wave of breaches of private accounts on the WhatsApp application in Angola, “a phenomenon commonly known as cloning”, in order to protect the privacy of users.
According to a press release from APD, META confirmed that it had received complaints from Angolan users whose accounts had been compromised and pledged to provide APD and users with the necessary resources to resolve these issues.
In this case, the note reads that to ensure the security of their accounts, Meta recommends that users regularly check devices associated with WhatsApp and “identify any suspicious devices through settings.”
Meta advises: “Users should not share the registration code or verification PIN for the so-called ‘two-step verification’ feature with other people, even friends or family.”
The app’s owners also explained that if users receive unsolicited emails or text messages asking to change their Two-Step Verification PIN or WhatsApp account registration code, they should avoid clicking on any links suggested by their contacts as this could be an attempt to clone the account.
