Meeting with a delegation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), led by President and CEO Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, at the Yavoloja National Palace on August 27, 2024. Andry Rajoelina said he would like to see GEF funding for Madagascar increase by $100 million between 2026 and 2030 to strengthen environmental and sustainable development policies.
The Big Island is one of the main beneficiaries of GEF funding in Africa. Since 1994, Madagascar has benefited from this funding to invest in the management and conservation of its protected areas. During these three decades, the country has received support for local communities in the sustainable management of natural resources, the protection of species and ecosystems, and the management of natural resources on land and in the sea. Madagascar has received more than $200 million to implement various strategies and legal instruments.
The conference discussed the promotion and development of ecotourism, a sector considered promising and that can play a key role in supporting other important areas of development in the country.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a large fund that addresses biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution, and pressures on the health of land and oceans. Its grants, blended financing, and strategic support help developing countries meet their most pressing environmental priorities and comply with international environmental conventions.
