CAIRO (AP) — A large collection of ancient artifacts from Egypt’s last dynasty has been discovered in 63 tombs in the Nile Delta, and experts are working to restore and catalog the finds, an official at Cairo’s National Antiquities Department said Monday.
Neveine el-Arif, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, said the artifacts included gold and jewelry dating back to the Late Egyptian and Ptolemaic periods, and that some of the items might go on display in one of the country’s museums.
An archaeological mission from Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered the mud-brick tomb at the Tell el-Dair necropolis in the city of Damietta in Damietta governorate, the Supreme Council of Antiquities said in a statement last month.
Other objects found in the burial area included statues, funerary amulets and a ceramic vessel containing 38 Ptolemaic-period bronze coins.
The Ptolemaic dynasty was the last dynasty of Egypt before it became part of the Roman Empire. The dynasty was founded in 305 BC, and Alexander the Great of Macedonia conquered Egypt in 332 BC. C. and one of his generals, Ptolemy, became Ptolemy I. Government was passed down through Ptolemy’s descendants until it ended with Cleopatra.
In 2018, Egypt exhibited artifacts from the Ptolemaic period for the first time at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, with about 300 artifacts on display.
