Azmi Hasan said the Umno logo even had a stronger presence than Barisan Nasional’s iconic “dancing” symbol.
(FMT) – A political analyst has suggested that Barisan Nasional (BN) contest the 16th General Election (GE16) under the Umno banner, saying the party’s emblem remains prominent among Malay voters.
Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the Umno logo remained a strong and effective influence in Malaysian politics, even more so than Barisan Nasional’s iconic “dance” symbol.
He said this was because UMNO has always been the dominant party in Barisan Nasional, which currently holds 30 parliamentary seats, of which UMNO holds 26, MCA holds 2, while MIC and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Sabah hold 1 each.
Azmi said it would be the right move for Barisan Nasional to contest under its own flag in the 16th general election if the coalition still exists, rather than using the Pakatan Harapan logo or the shared unity government coalition.
Bil Chebala of the University of Malaysia Sabah agreed, saying using its own party emblem would reduce voter confusion in areas long controlled by the Barisan Nasional, thereby securing Barisan Nasional’s support.
Nevertheless, he said the alliance between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan would depend on the outcome of the 16th General Election and how the two coalitions performed in the election.
“If one of the parties suffers a significant loss, or fails to secure a two-thirds majority, I would expect them to engage in some political maneuvering to forge a new coalition to form a federal government.”
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reiterated that the united coalition would face the next general election together, despite each contesting under their own banner.
Despite repeated statements by the Umno president that Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan would join forces for the 16th general election, Pakatan Harapan secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said in March that the ruling coalition had not yet made a decision on the matter.
