Annuar Musa’s campaign enters UMNO stronghold
(Daily Xianna) – Despite a tough one-on-one fight between BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the Aug 17 by-election, BN faces an uphill battle in reclaiming the Nigiri state seat.
Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) political analyst Associate Professor Noor Azuki Yusof revealed that preliminary surveys conducted before and on nomination day showed that the support pattern among Nigiri voters remained largely unchanged and continued to favour PN.
Azuki’s survey also showed that there was no significant shift in voters’ support from PN to BN or UMNO candidates in this by-election compared to the 2023 state election.
In the last state election, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, who was contesting on behalf of PAS, won the Nigiri seat by 6,517 votes (a majority of 810 votes), defeating the incumbent Barisan Nasional/Umno MP Ab Aziz Yusoff who received 5,707 votes.
Azuki predicted that Perikatan Nasional is likely to retain the Nyingiri seat in the by-election, although the majority its candidate received is likely to be lower than in the last state election.
“Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Fadzil Hasan expressed confidence that PN would be able to maintain the status quo in Ningalee, noting that the movement led by PAS central committee member Tan Sri Annuar Musa was very effective and had successfully infiltrated many Umno strongholds, including Orang Asli villages.
“Previously, it was difficult for PAS’ campaign machinery to enter Orang Asli settlements, but Annuar’s involvement in the campaign has enabled them to enter these areas, although it remains uncertain whether they will vote for PN candidates in the by-election,” he said.
Azuki further pointed out that the appointment of veteran leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamidi as Barisan Nasional’s election machinery director does not seem to significantly improve Umno’s chances of retaking state seats that were once the party’s strongholds.
“Although Umno and PAS teams are now active in Nenggeri, residents are not particularly enthusiastic and are just waiting to see what attractive proposals the contesting parties will come up with,” he added.
The Nenggili by-election will be a straight contest between Barisan Nasional’s Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani and Perikatan Nasional’s Rizwadi Ismail, who recently joined Bersatu from Bus.
According to the electoral roll, Nenggiri has a total of 20,259 eligible voters, including 20,245 general voters and 14 police officers, as of June 18. There will be no advance voting.
Barisan Nasional had won the Nenggiri seat four times in a row since 2004, but lost it to PN in last year’s state election when Aziz defeated Umno’s Abu Aziz.
