Angolan influencer Ana da Silva Miguel, or Neth Nahara for short, has been under arrest for almost a year, accused of insulting and insulting the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International called on the Angolan authorities on Tuesday (13th) to release the influential figure, accusing the government of suppressing its critics.

In a note released today, the deputy regional director of the human rights organization for East and Southern Africa stressed that “Ness Nahara should not have been arrested at all.”

Vongai Chikwanda added that Angolan authorities were abusing the Criminal Code in an attempt to silence peaceful dissent, adding that it was absurd that Neth Nahara had been convicted of committing “atrocities against the state” while his sentence was increased from six months to two years during an appeals process.

Amnesty International added that “Angola’s constitution explicitly protects freedom of expression, which includes expressing political views on social media.”

The deputy director of the human rights organization’s East Africa region also called on the authorities to release four other people who have been arbitrarily detained for more than ten months simply for peacefully exercising their human rights to protest and expression, namely Adolfo Campos and Hermenegildo Victor. José (Gildo das Ruas), Abraão Pedro Santos (better known as Pensador) and Gilson Moreira (Tanaice Neutro) have been in prison since September 16, 2023, after trying to organize a demonstration in Luanda.

Remember, Neth Nahara was arrested at her home in Luanda on August 13, 2023, after she posted a live video on social media criticizing the President of the Republic.
