We have learned from the Grasse Public Prosecutor’s Office that a gendarme was killed this Monday after he was hit by a motorist for refusing to obey.
The victim is 54 years old
The gendarmerie said the victim was a warrant officer from the gendarmerie’s mobile platoon who was shot while conducting a check at the exit of the A8 motorway in the town of Mougins.
According to gendarmerie sources, the tragedy occurred at around 8:40 p.m. when a person driving a black BMW refused to be checked when leaving the A8 motorway. The car then violently struck a member of the mobile platoon responsible for the banal operation.
The victim is 54 years old, married and the father of two children, aged 12 and 16, the Ministry of the Interior said in a press release. According to the press release, the warrant officer had served as a non-commissioned officer in the gendarmerie for 30 years and joined the Mandelieu-la-Napoule platoon (Alpes-Maritimes) in 2007.
Fugitive author ‘actively sought’
The police immediately launched a major operation, using helicopters and with the support of gendarmes from neighboring provinces to search for the fugitives.
The Carabinieri stressed that checks were carried out in particular at traffic intersections and that all the necessary information was shared with the Italian authorities if the fugitive tried to cross the border.
“This evening, a gendarme was killed by a car on the A8 motorway near Mougins in the Alpes-Maritimes,” resigning Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin commented on X, former Twitter: “The author of this refusal is actively seeking compliance while on the run.”
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, responded on the same social network: “The death of a gendarme in Mougins for refusing to obey causes deep sadness and great anger. “Every effort must be made to challenge him,” he added.
“We are deeply moved and outraged to learn that tonight a gendarme in Mougins was killed by a fugitive criminal after he refused to obey,” he commented Eric SciottiAlpes-Maritimes deputy and chairman of the Republican Party.
