A man was detained on Saturday for stalking his ex-partner in breach of two restraining orders.
The 57-year-old Syrian man, from Marsaskala, had tried several times to contact his ex-partner using the WhatsApp messaging platform and stalked her around Retun and Zabar.
But things appeared to escalate on Friday afternoon when he waited for her outside a hairdresser’s shop as she headed for an appointment, and police had to intervene to order him to leave the area, the court heard.
The estranged couple have a 14-year-old daughter.
The man was arrested and taken to court on Saturday and charged with stalking and harassing his ex-partner.
He is also accused of violating two restraining orders issued by the court in separate lawsuits in April and May.
The man, whose name has not been released to protect the identity of his teenage daughter, has pleaded not guilty.
His lawyer did not move for bail and the court remanded him in custody.
Attorneys Kris Busietta, Alessandro Farrugia and Jason Azzopardi appeared for the defendants.
Inspectors Christian Cauchi and Colin Sheldon prosecuted.
