Many Garden Staters Showing their Jersey courage— and athletic prowess — at the Paris Olympics, several athletes won gold and silver medals.
Sydney McLaughlin-Leveron of Dunnellon, New Jersey, won gold in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on Thursday, August 8. The 25-year-old track star broke her own world record with a time of 50.37 seconds. McLaughlin-Leveron, who attends Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, previously broke the world record at the Olympic trials in late June.
In swimming, two Morris County natives, Jack Alexie, 21, and Nick Fink, 31, won big. Alexie, who grew up in Mendham and attended the Delbarton School in Morristown, won a gold and a silver. Fink, a Morristown native who attended the Pingree School in Basking Ridge, won a gold and two silvers. On the personal front, Fink’s wife, Melanie Magalies Fink (a former Olympian herself), is pregnant with their first child.

- Gymnast Herzley Rivera16 years old, from Oradell: Women’s Art Team All-Around Gold Medal
- Golfer Scotty Scheffler28, Ridgewood: Men’s individual golf gold medal
