All India Radio (AIR) is setting up a new relay station in Chintapalli district to improve broadcast access in interior areas of Alluri Sitarama Raju district. The move is aimed at overcoming the challenges posed by dense forest terrain, which currently hinders effective broadcast transmission from the Visakhapatnam centre.

Currently, the Agency region is not able to adequately receive radio transmissions from the Visakhapatnam centre as there is no relay centre in the region. The 10 kW direct relay central transmitter in Visakhapatnam covers only a 60 to 70 km radius, so the densely forested areas cannot properly receive broadcast programmes. This new relay station, equipped with a 5 kW central transmitter and a 75-metre high tower, will extend the transmission range to about 40 km, providing radio services to people in the ASR region.

Rs 12.5 crore has been allocated for the construction of a central transmission tower at Chintapalli. The tower will be 75 metres tall and will have a frequency capacity of 5 kW, giving a transmission wave coverage of about 40 km.

“Another relay station will be set up in Vizianagaram to cover the Parvathipuram-Manyan area. Two transmitters will be set up simultaneously,” C Subba Rao, Deputy Director (Engineering Department) of Visakhapatnam AIR, told TNIE.

He further informed that the site survey for construction of relay station at Chintapalli has been completed and the relay station will be set up at a high altitude location near the youth training centre in the district.

“The land allotment has been completed and we expect the construction of the office and transmitter to start in one and a half to two months. We aim to complete the project in 18 months. Currently, there is no available signal, either from private stations or Akashvani. Setting up this relay station will be beneficial in broadcasting not only entertainment radio programmes but also government programmes, news and live weather updates for people living in the interior areas,” Rao added.
