Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the commissioning of 100-watt low-power FM transmitters at 91 locations, strengthening the All India Radio (AIR) network from 524 stations to 615.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the expansion will expand AIR’s coverage to 73.5% of the country’s population.

In response to the growing demand for FM radio services in India, driven by clear sound quality and the proliferation of mobile phones equipped with FM receivers, the government has approved the installation of 63 additional FM transmitters.

In his statement, Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of democratizing technology for India to realize its full potential. He cited initiatives such as rural fiber optic networks, low-cost data and UPI-based banking services as helping to democratize information and technology.
