Two girls arrested on Friday on suspicion of carrying out an arson attack at a shopping centre in Alkmaar are also suspected of six other arsons, prosecutors said on Monday.

The girls, aged 12 and 14, appeared in court on Monday, with the 14-year-old being detained. The 12-year-old was allowed to return home.

All shops at the De Mare shopping centre on Europe Avenue were evacuated, as well as some nearby homes, when the fire broke out. The fire caused considerable damage to the building.

Other arson attempts included a city centre library, a McDonald’s branch, a Hema Fresh store, a Grote Kerk, a cinema and a Decathlon store branch. According to The Telegraph.

The two girls, from Hruhovard and Den Helder, were caught near the complex on Friday evening after police raised the alarm.

In the Netherlands, children aged 12 to 15 can be sentenced to up to one year in juvenile detention. Court cases involving minors are also subject to strict privacy laws.

Police have not confirmed the girl’s age but have urged people to stop circulating her image online.
