Pixar’s Inside Out 2 broke box office records last weekend, taking an estimated $295m (£232.6m) worldwide.

Parent company Disney said that made it the strongest global debut for an animated film ever.

In North America, box office revenue reached approximately $155 million, replacing Dune: Episode II as the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend this year.

It’s a big win for movie theaters, which have seen some new movies underperform at the box office this year.

Inside Out 2 had a much stronger opening weekend than the first film, which grossed $90 million on its opening weekend and $858 million worldwide.

This is the company’s second-best opening in the North American market, second only to “Incredibles 2” released in 2018.

The blockbuster’s opening weekend performance is a boost for Pixar, which has had relatively weak opening weekends for some of its recent films.

Inside Out 2 is the first sequel to the 2015 Oscar-winning blockbuster, which focuses on the emotional story of a young girl named Riley.

While the original dealt with emotions like joy, fear and anger, the latest episode explores issues like jealousy and anxiety.

The successful release of Inside Out 2 provided a glimmer of hope for the studio during a slow start to the summer.

The bulk of ticket sales each year typically occur between the first weekend in May and early September.

However, due to last year’s actors and writers’ strike, fewer films were released this year.

The industry must also contend with content and customer issues for streaming services.

The number of movie tickets sold in North America so far this year has fallen by nearly a quarter compared with the same period in 2023, according to media market research firm Comscore.
