A sequel to the 1979 masterpiece? Alien: Romulus could be defined as such, the seventh chapter of the saga that Ridley Scott began forty-five years ago, chronologically following its predecessor.
More precisely, it’s a mid-film, a movie inserted between the two previous feature films in the series, in this case the first and second (directed by James Cameron in 1986 and titled in Italian “Aliens – The Final Clash”), but with completely new characters, except for one… surprising return.
The story centers on a group of young colonists who are willing to give whatever it takes to abandon the degraded planet they find themselves on and seek fortune elsewhere. In search of a better future, they escape into the universe and travel deep into the depths of an abandoned space station, where they encounter a group of aliens.
Director Fede Alvarez is a director who is used to revisiting important legends from the past: his feature film debut was The House (2013), the fourth entry in the series and a remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult work, but he also directed Millennium – What Doesn’t Kill in 2018, a sequel to Millennium: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, adapted from the novel by Stieg Larsson.
However, given the disappointing results of his first two feature films, Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), he signed on for the most ambitious and complex project of his career in Alien: Romulus 1979, both directed by Ridley Scott.
