The Compendium of Irish Pints by Ali Dunworth is the Central Ireland Book Club’s June 2024 book selection.
Each month we pick a new Irish book or a great book by an Irish author and celebrate the Irish’s amazing ability to tell good stories for the Ireland Central Book Club.
Published by Irish Publishing House in May 2024 JiudouhangDunworth’s debut book, A Compendium of the Irish Pint, chronicles the history of our relationship with the pint and pays homage to every pint occasion you can imagine – including the non-occasions.
Speaking about her debut book, Dunworthy said: “Compendium of Irish Beer is my attempt to capture some of the magic, lore, love and fun of Irish beer.
“I wanted to write about the Irish pint as a cultural phenomenon, but also about pints and pubs in the way we talk about and enjoy them.
“From beer’s historical roots to how it became a cultural cornerstone of Ireland, it’s filled with nostalgia, observations, facts, cosy pubs and the sound of clinking glasses.
“I hope it provides a snapshot of our current beer and pub culture whilst acknowledging the challenges our beloved pubs face in an ever-changing environment.”
In April this year, Dunworth shared an extract from The Complete Guide to Irish Pints with IrishCentral – check it out here.

Summary of The Irish Pint by Ali Dunworth
In The Irish Pint Compendium, journalist (and pint lover) Ali Dunworth delves into the culture, customs and fun of the Irish pint.
Beginning with the birth of beer and tracing Ireland’s unique drinking journey from Brehon Law to the Invasion, Ali shares why “Having a Pint” means so much more than just drinking a pint.
From the ubiquitous airport and after-get off work beer, to the importance of beer mats, finding a beer in a cosy pub to discuss a hangover or eat chips for dinner, there is no category of beer that Ali has left unfinished (or unfinished!).
Covering everything from etiquette to expressions, celebratory beers, mourning beers, festive beers, old man’s pubs and beyond, The Compendium of Irish Beer shows why this popular drink is an integral part of Irish society and why it has spread beyond.
Stephen Heffernan’s (aka Hephee) illustrations capture the culture of pints so perfectly in his signature style that you’ll find yourself thirsty and sending the text we all love to receive: “Fancy a pint?”
