The Algerian Para athletics team is sending 20 athletes, including seven girls, to the 17th Paralympic Games in Paris (28 August-8 September) with the aim of extending its record and confirming its status as flag bearers of Algerian Para sport.
In Paris, the goal of the discipline was to get as many podiums as possible, as usual, hoping to “improve the results for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics”, with three throwers winning gold, Safia Djelal (W/F57), Asmahane Boudjadar (W/F33) and race discoverer Athmani Skander Djamil (400m), who also won silver in the 100m.
Since the epic of the late Mohamed Allek (author of five Paralympic titles: 100m, 200m and 400m and bronze), several Algerian athletes have taken over in a very good way, such as the throwers Bettina, Medjmedj Nadia, Nassima Saifi, the sprinter Samir Nueva and the middle-distance runner Abdellatif Bakar.
Paralympic is the only sport in which Algeria has won eight consecutive titles at the Paralympic Games in Japan (Atlanta 96, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020), and also enjoys the most In JP competitions, he won 75 medals (23 gold, 22 silver and 30 bronze), followed by judo with 4 gold medals by Nine Messaoud, Sid Ali Lamri, Mouloud Nora and Chérine, and two bronze medals by Zoubida Bouazoug and Chérine.
During the 17th JP, the mission of the Skander teammates is to live up to the ambitions of Algerian Para athletics, always aspiring for better results. To do this, the 20 athletes need to remain calm and optimistic, some of whom are new to the sport, such as Benallou Bakhta (javelin), Missouni Abdelhak (club) and Fakhr Eddine Thelaidjia (sprinter).
The Algerian selection team was well prepared, led by thirteen coaches and experienced technicians, and was concocted by the national technical management. Before joining Paris, the Algerian athletes went through a series of regroupings in Algiers and abroad, perfecting their preparations.
Taking into account the results achieved at the last World Cup in Kobe, Japan, and the rankings of the athletes, the technicians have no hesitation in predicting a “glorious performance” in Paris. For example, the success of athletes like Athmani Skander Djamil, Safia Djelal, Nassima Saifi will give additional motivation to others, especially those who are exploring this other dimension of the competition.
