Alex Sciberras submits nomination for Labor Party president

Former Labor mayor Alex Sciberras has submitted his nomination for Labor Party president.

“In every step I have taken, I have always carried with me a loyalty to what the Labour Party stands for and the ideals for which it was founded. Today, I recognise that Labour needs that loyalty more than ever,” he said in a Facebook post announcing his nomination.

Siberas had been considering running for the party’s deputy leader’s post and had opposed the state government’s decision to allow lawmakers to run for the position.

Siberas, a former member of the PT executive committee and now a lawyer, is the son of the late judge Philip Siberas. He was also the first Labour Party mayor of Msida.

In a Facebook post on Friday night, Siberas said the party needs to be open to new ideas and different voices to keep the party active and vibrant.

“In this endeavor, I will remain, as always, close to the people. I will always remain open to dialogue and the sharing of ideas. Most importantly, I will always remain true to the principles that make this movement the only truly progressive force in our country,” he said.

Labour is currently accepting nominations to fill a number of top positions in the party, which will hold its annual conference in September.

The vacant posts include deputy party leader, deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, president, vice president and international and organising secretary.

The party’s deadline for accepting nominations is Sunday.

The upcoming party elections come after a string of resignations from top party officials. Disappointing results in European Parliament elections Last June.

Since June, Daniel Micallefthe People’s Party vice chairman announced his resignation. The following month, Chris Finn announced that he would not contest for the BJP deputy leader post again after the court found sufficient prima facie evidence to put him on trial in the Vitals fraud case.

August, Party Chief Executive Randolph De Batista also resigned, but his vacant position was filled by Leonid McKaybecause this role does not require election.

Finally, the Chairman of PL Ramona Attard announced that she would not run for the post again, saying she was “ready for a new challenge” but would continue to work within the party.
