Carlos Alcaraz held off a comeback from ninth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on Tuesday to win 6-3 7-6(3) 6-4 and reach the French Open semifinals alongside soon-to-be world No. 1 Yannik Sinner.
The third seed defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 5-0, causing all sorts of trouble for his Greek opponent with his backhand high kick serve and winning the first set in 33 minutes.
A rematch of last year’s quarterfinal was played at the Philippe Chatrier Court and the result looked identical, with Alcaraz breaking first and then leading 3-0, while Tsitsipas made many mistakes early in the second set and did not help his opponent.
Tsitsipas, trailing 4-2, fired a powerful forehand that delighted the crowd and he eventually solved the problem with a break back and then levelled the match, looking refreshed, but Alcaraz raised his level in the tiebreak to double his advantage.
A frustrated Tsitsipas complained repeatedly about Alcaraz’s slow release and nearly hit him with a high smash in a tight third set, but his Spanish opponent won the match easily to advance to his second French Open semifinal.
