Since the building area was too small for builders to erect scaffolding, a creative solution was needed.
Smith’s builder, Matt Williamson of Willoworks, helped overcome this shortcoming by suggesting an internal staircase be incorporated into the design of the concrete shell, meaning the building’s walls could continue all the way to the edge of the block.

For Smith, making full use of space is particularly important. “My main task is to give myself as much space as possible. Every inch of space is important.”
But not at the expense of light. Smith felt it was important that the master bedroom, located at the rear of the house, have a small patio and skylight. A large automated glass hatch at the top of the staircase doubles as a skylight, allowing sunlight to stream into the upstairs living area.
Williamson said he enjoyed working on the interiors. “We tried various designs to make the most of the space on the block while keeping the light in…Once we had the exterior done we could play around with all the options, which was a really fun project.”
The kitchen was thoughtfully designed with custom cabinetry to accommodate a narrow, deep refrigerator to suit the Smiths’ storage needs. The countertops are deep, and the Smiths decided to use an induction cooktop so that the glass surface could be safely used as additional countertop space if needed.

By far the best feature is the roof terrace – a rarity in the typically restrictive Albert Park planning environment – from which residents can see straight into the CBD.
Smith and her husband have lived in the house for a year, and she said entertaining on the patio is like a dream, especially on New Year’s Eve.
Hoo said the design of the house was impressive. “She was able to make the most of the land, so there’s no wasted space on the three floors,” Hoo said.
“It’s very high-end in design and finish. What makes it special is the low maintenance, which I think, in addition to its central location, will attract a lot of buyers.”

Williamson said the house had already won accolades. “In fact, we’ve just been nominated for a Master Builders Award for Excellence in Housing for this project.”
“It’s a project we’re really proud of. It’s definitely my favorite project and I’m really happy with it. In this area, it shows what can be achieved in a small space.”
