The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, has died.

According to The Nation, Aylala died in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

He underwent surgery for prostate cancer on Wednesday and died hours after the procedure, according to his family.

According to reports, the family of Waheed Aylala, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, said: “It is with great sadness that we inform you that our friend, brother, family, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Aylala, has passed away.”

A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State also confirmed the death of the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak on the matter.

On Thursday morning, PUNCH Online tried to verify the news with the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police, Benjamin Hundeyin, but in vain as his phone was ringing.

In November 2023, Aylala was appointed as the Acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos as DCP.

Aylala, who was previously the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department in the state, succeeded AIG Idowu Owohonwa.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, appointed Airala as the head of the Akwa Ibom State Command in February 2024.
