Monday 5 August 2024 – Port Vila, Vanuatu: On Saturday 3rd August 2024, Vanuatu welcomed Air Niugini at Bauerfield International Airport for the first time since 2020. This was the first time Air Niugini had flown back to Port Vila since Vanuatu reopened its borders in July 2022.
Air Niugini will operate flights from Port Moresby to Port Vila via Honiara every Saturday, with the return flight departing the following Sunday along the same route. The weekly flights will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 737 aircraft, carrying up to 140 passengers.
Air Niugini now joins Virgin Australia, Fiji Airways and Solomon Airlines in supporting and increasing international seat capacity in Vanuatu and providing our consumers with more choice when travelling to and from Port Vila.
“The flight provides convenient connections between Vanuatu/Manila, Vanuatu/Hong Kong and Vanuatu/Cairns, Australia.”said Mr Gary Seddon, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini.
Air Niugini stressed that the flights will also reconnect Papua New Guineans and Ni-Vanuatu people in various fields such as business, culture, sports, family and work at government level. “Overall, it promotes understanding, partnership and ideas between the two Melanesian countries.” Mr. Seddon added.
“We are delighted to see Air Niugini return to Port Vila Airport, which not only improves air connectivity between Vanuatu and the northern Melanesian Islands, but also provides another option to connect to the rest of the world from Vanuatu’s main international airport. We welcome the Bird of Paradise back to our gateway airport,” said Mr Jason Rakau, Chief Executive Officer of Vanuatu Airports.
The Vanuatu Tourism Authority welcomes the launch of weekly flights as it will further open Vanuatu to the international market, benefiting our tourism industry and economy.
“We are delighted to see Air Niugini return to Vanuatu. This new route paves the way for more activity between Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu and we look forward to exploring the opportunities it brings to both our countries. We have a strong interest in developing the tourism and travel industries and with greater connectivity it will surely help enhance travel and business opportunities,” said Ms. Adela Issachar Aru of the Vanuatu Tourism Board.
“We look forward to working together to expand these travel opportunities and connections to open up Southeast Asian tourism and business markets.”
