The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has castigated the poor infrastructure at the Gombe Naval Base.
He called on the Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, to assist in improving the infrastructure of the base in the state to make it more conducive for carrying out work.
Abubakar made the call while visiting Yahaya at the old banquet hall of the Gombe State Government House on Saturday.
According to Abubakar, his visit was to seek the governor’s support for the naval base.
“This will allow us to more quickly open and improve base facilities,” he said in his speech. “Any assistance will go a long way toward ensuring the base is fully operational as soon as possible.”
He decried the lack of drinking water supply, electricity and roads at their newly occupied base in Gombe.
Abubakar said: “The presence of the Nigerian Air Force in Gombe State began in 2015 with the establishment of the 175th Nigerian Air Force Wing in Gombe State.
“The state has since generously allocated over 230 acres of land for the Lawanti International Airport. This led to the establishment of the 109 Combat Revitalisation Group in 2019 as the hub for the Nigerian Air Force’s system operations.
“We have made progress, but unfortunately that progress has been hampered by a lack of infrastructure, accommodations and other facilities needed to support the personnel and technologically advanced platforms we plan to deploy.”
While complaining that the base is not connected to the national grid, Abubakar also said that “the cost of connecting to the grid is very high because we need transformers and cables.”
Yahya, in turn, promised to meet some of their demands, notably to provide water, construct buildings, and strictly abide by the agreement before allocating land near the base.
“We thank you for your support to the state government; Gombe State will continue to support you and stand with you,” Yahaya said.
