LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is proud to announce a significant achievement in its mission to provide cutting-edge medicines and support, regardless of ability to pay: 2 million people worldwide receive care from AHF.

“We are so honored to have reached this historic milestone. When we launched our global program more than 20 years ago in two African countries with 100 patients in each, we never imagined that one day we would be caring for 2 million lives around the world,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AHF. “This is an honor and a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff, partners and volunteers who work tirelessly every day to make a difference in the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS.”

Scheduled commemorative events

Many colorful commemorative events were held by AHF offices in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Highlights included celebrations with giant commemorative cakes, produce donations from AHF-supported community farms, free health checks and HIV testing, educational performances, free condom distribution, opening of new clinics, sports competitions, screenings of AHF documentaries and more. It was a way to celebrate, recognize and thank the communities, AHF staff and government partners who made this milestone of 2 million lives served possible.

AHF Milestones

Since its founding in 1987, AHF has been at the forefront of the global fight against HIV/AIDS, providing essential services, advocacy and innovative solutions to combat the epidemic. This important milestone underscores AHF’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS.

  • December 1, 2020, 1.5 million lives served

  • Serving 1 million lives, October 1, 2018

  • 250,000 Lives Served, November 27, 2013

  • April 15, 2009, 100,000 lives served

“More than two decades ago, AHF took a leap of faith to launch its global program in Africa, with great success. We began supporting 100 patients in South Africa and Uganda in 2002, when antiretroviral drugs cost $5,000 per patient per year,” said Dr. Penninah Iutung, head of AHF’s Africa office. “Today, more than half of the two million patients with acute heart failure treated are in Africa. A combination of medicine and advocacy – implementing prevention, care and treatment programs and opposing big pharmaceutical companies’ efforts to lower drug prices – has enabled us to achieve this major achievement together.”

With clinics and facilities in 47 countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, AHF continues to leverage innovative healthcare delivery models to expand its reach and impact, reaching communities in need by providing comprehensive healthcare, treatment, testing, prevention and support services.

As AHF continues to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for access to HIV care and treatment for all who need it, and to holding Big Pharma and those responsible for making the decisions accountable.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is the world’s largest AIDS organization, currently providing health care or services to more than 2 million people in 47 countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia Pacific, Europe, and the United States.
