On September 7, Ahuachapan will become “Capital of the Republic of El Salvador for a Day” to celebrate the Lantern Festival, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of El Salvador since 2014. This celebration, which illuminates the streets, houses and parks of the city’s iconic buildings with thousands of lights, commemorates the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and attracts thousands of national and international tourists.
Tradition and culture: Ahuachapan shines during Lantern Festival
The Legislative Assembly passed a 59-vote bill declaring Ahuachapan the “Capital of El Salvador” on September 7 in recognition of the cultural and religious importance of the Lantern Festival. The celebration is a centuries-old tradition that dates back to the mid-19th century, originating in Ahuachapan and later spreading to other regions such as Apaneca, Concepción de Ataco and Tacuba.
During the celebration, residents place handmade lanterns and creative lighting designs, transforming the city into a visual spectacle and creating a festive atmosphere for the thousands of visitors who come to take part in the festivities. The festival also boosts the local economy, benefiting entrepreneurs, tour operators, and residents who sell food and handicrafts.
The History and Significance of the Lantern Festival
The history of the Lantern Festival dates back more than 170 years, and there are two versions about its origin. The first is related to the celebration of the birth of the Virgin Mary, and the second is related to an earthquake in 1850. According to tradition, after the earthquake, the residents of Ahuachapan lit candles and lanterns to illuminate the streets at night. In the darkness, go out to seek safety.
“This celebration has a history of more than 170 years and there are two versions of its origin. The first is the birth of the Virgin; the second is to remember the date of the earthquake and the people affected took to the streets and lit candles in the darkness,” explained Deputy Estuardo Rodríguez during the 17th plenary session.
