Families of victims of anti-government protests in Senegal have decided to take their struggle to the international stage. Together with the “Victims Collective of President Macky Sall’s Regime”, they have formally contacted the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, demanding an in-depth investigation.

For three years, these families have denounced the deaths and unjust imprisonment of their loved ones during demonstrations against the government. They believe that the Senegalese authorities have not adequately responded to their demands for justice. By contacting the United Nations, they hope to gain international recognition and accelerate the investigation of this violence.

The protests that intensified between 2021 and 2024 were marked by police violence and mass arrests. Political tensions in Senegal peaked during the tenure of Macky Sall, with reports of abuses of power and human rights violations widespread. Last June, the victims’ collective had already launched a petition calling for an international arrest warrant for the outgoing president.

However, an amnesty law passed at the end of Macky Sall’s regime currently prohibits any judicial review of these crimes in Senegal. Faced with this obstacle, the collective has not given up and plans to continue its case at the International Criminal Court (ICC). For the collective’s leader, Boubacar Thayer, the involvement of international organizations is essential to advance justice and national reconciliation.

The collective is counting on international mobilization to put pressure on the Senegalese government. By contacting the UN High Commissioner, they hope not only for an impartial investigation but also for global awareness of the violations that were committed. They hope that this will encourage other victims to come forward and support their cause.

The international arena remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for the victims of the Senegalese protests. Despite legislative obstacles, the victims of Macky Sall’s regime remain collectively determined to obtain reparations and ensure that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.
