Technology group Wärtsilä announced on August 26 that it has signed a contract with Norwegian shipowner Eidesvik to provide the equipment needed to convert offshore platform supply vessels to run on ammonia fuel.
The ship, named “Viking Energy”, has signed a contract with energy giant Equinor and is expected to be converted in early 2026 and start operating with ammonia in the first half of 2026, becoming the world’s first operational ship powered by ammonia.

Recently, as the shipping industry seeks more sustainable fuel options, ammonia has emerged as a promising alternative fuel. In this context, African countries are implementing policies and strategies to promote the development and export of green hydrogen and green ammonia.
For example, Egypt recently achieved a milestone by exporting the world’s first batch of green ammonia produced at its plants. The country also recently signed four green ammonia production agreements with European companies worth a total of $35.4 billion.
