Niger and Nigeria have signed a new military cooperation agreement, marking an important turning point in relations between the two countries following the coup in Niger. The signing took place during a visit by Nigerian Army Chief of Staff, General Gwabin Moussa, to his Nigerien counterpart, General Moussa Saraou Balmu.

The agreement aims to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, focusing on security cooperation in a region where the threat of terrorism remains a major challenge. Nigerian authorities stressed that the commitment is aimed at “deepening brotherly relations” and “exploring opportunities” to improve regional security.

The high-level meeting comes after a period of tension between the two countries following the coup d’état by former Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, to which Nigeria initially responded with draconian measures such as closing its borders and cutting off electricity supplies, in support of ECOWAS’s decision.

Nigeria reopened its border and restored electricity supply as ECOWAS lifted sanctions, paving the way for renewed bilateral relations. The development stands in stark contrast to the tensions between Niger and Benin, where the border remains closed due to ongoing security concerns.

The two sides reaffirmed their desire to work together to ensure regional stability, while clarifying that Nigeria will not destabilize its neighbors. This shared commitment highlights a clear intention to reverse recent tensions.

Niger has also expressed its desire to resume its active participation in the Multinational Joint Force, an important institution for regional security. General Moussa plans to visit Nigeria to finalize the details of this new cooperation, marking a new stage in the relationship between the two countries.
