The Spanish government announced on Tuesday, August 27, that it would donate 500,000 doses of vaccine against mumps, or 20% of its stock, to several Central African countries, while inviting other European countries to do the same in order to stop the spread of the disease.
“Spain has indicated to the European Commission that it will donate 20% of its vaccine stocks, or 100,000 ampoules equivalent to 500,000 doses,” the Spanish Ministry of Health said in a press release.
“The epicenter is in several countries in Central Africa and it is crucial to act in the region in order to contain the current situation. It is absurd to stockpile vaccines where there are no problems,” the department added, stressing that Madrid has asked the European Commission to invite all EU member states to donate 20% of their respective vaccine stocks.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and the Central African Republic are the countries worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic in Africa. Cases have also been reported in about ten other countries on the continent.
Declared a “public health emergency” by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) continent-wide and the World Health Organization (WHO) internationally, MPox is a disease virus that spreads from animals to humans and from person to person through physical contact. It causes fever, muscle pain and skin lesions.
