On August 4, 2024, Mali officially announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Ukraine. The decision was made after a controversial statement by a senior Ukrainian official, accusing Kiev of involvement in recent terrorist attacks that caused heavy losses to the Malian army and its Russian allies.

The decision was announced on state television by Colonel Abdoulaye Mejia, spokesman for Mali’s transitional government, who noted that the suspension was effective immediately and accused Ukraine of supporting acts of international terrorism and violating Mali’s sovereignty.

The origins of this decision can be traced back to a late July video by Andrei Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, who allegedly admitted that Kiev was involved in the fighting. These clashes between the Malian army, the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, and separatist and jihadist groups have caused considerable losses.

The Malian government believes that these actions go beyond foreign interference and constitute support for international terrorism. Severing diplomatic relations is seen as a necessary measure to protect national sovereignty and respond to what it considers an unacceptable provocation.

The decision also came after the Ukrainian ambassador to Dakar was summoned by the Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who raised tensions by sharing a video on social networks supporting the terrorist attacks in northern Mali.

The severance of diplomatic relations with Ukraine marks a turning point in Mali’s foreign policy. It underscores the Malian Government’s desire to defend itself against any form of interference and to protect its territory from terrorist threats, while sending a clear message to the international community about its position in the face of these events.
