The headteacher at IKC Regenboog Primary School in Åss is delighted to be able to welcome all children back again on Thursday. In the near future, we will provide more guidance for children who need it. “The intensity has decreased, but this does not mean that everyone’s confidence has been fully restored.” The school was closed for two days after the children were threatened on Snapchat.
Last week, several eighth graders received a photo of a gun and bullets with the child’s name on it. After investigation by police, it was found that the sender was not in the Netherlands or had never been to the Netherlands. The students were not in danger.
As a result, the school was allowed to reopen this Thursday. Director Fréderique Welten-den Doop said the first day went well. “It’s exciting for parents and children, but also great that we can welcome everyone again,” she said.
She is relieved that the tense days are over. “You don’t want this. School has to be a safe place. Parents ask us if we can completely guarantee that schools are safe again. It is, but we have to rebuild trust slowly. Today the first step has been taken”, says Welten-den Doop.
“We noticed that in all of our classes.”
We made clear plans with all school staff in advance on how to best spend the day. In the morning, in addition to the teachers, GGD staff also came to the campus to answer all the questions of the parents.
There is space in the classroom for children to talk about the threat. “We have been focusing extensively on this in all classes this morning in a way that is age appropriate for the children. We have looked at what the children have seen and heard in recent days and talked to them about it,” the director said.
Everyone has experienced the threats in different ways in recent days. The youngest children are particularly happy they are being allowed back to school. “The older children have questions about whether school is really safe and why something like this could happen. We explain to them how social media works and so on.”
“It’s not like nothing happened.”
Following an investigation, police concluded that the students were never in danger. But Welten-den Doop found that not everyone was convinced that the primary school was safe. “Not all children returned to school today. Some parents would rather wait another day. We understand that very well. What happened is not nothing.”
In any case, IKC de Regenboog will be paying special attention to the children and parents in the coming weeks. The summer holidays are only two weeks away, so the director hopes that the school year can still end well. “We make sure to continue talking to the parents and the children. In the coming weeks, the teachers, the children’s coaches and the family contact will pay extra attention. Victim support and the GGD will also be involved.”
