ActionSA’s Nobuhle Mthembu is the new Speaker of the Johannesburg Parliament.

She replaces Margaret Arnolds, who lost her seat on Friday.

Mthembu’s rival was Nolanla Sifumba of the Democratic Alliance, who received 68 of the 248 votes.

Action South Africa said in a statement on Tuesday that Mthembu was an “experienced, dedicated and passionate advocate for accountability and transparency.”

“Congressman Mthembu has been at the forefront of safeguarding the interests of Johannesburg residents throughout her tenure and we believe these qualities make her the ideal choice for Speaker,” the statement said.
