New Diary, Santo Domingo. – The Dominican Refinery (Refidomsa) has presented the third executive report on the hydrocarbon survey in the country’s basins, the novelty of which is that this new version confirms the presence of tangible oil on the national territory.
The study, conducted by Refidomsa’s Oil and Gas Research and Exploration and Development Department in partnership with the Pedro Henriques Urena University (UNPHU), is the latest of three reports published this year. This version reveals the potential presence of more than 498 million barrels of oil in the area studied.
Speaking at a press conference, the general manager of Refidomsa, Yamily López, explained that these results show an estimate of the possible quantities of hydrocarbons found in the Azua, Cibao Occidental, Cibao Oriental and Enriquillo basins.
“In the surveys we present today, it is detailed that the Azua basin has 38 million barrels of original oil and 5.7 million barrels of recoverable oil; Cibao Occidental has 203 million barrels of original barrels and 30 million barrels of recoverable barrels; the Cibao Oriental basin has 11 million barrels of original reserves and 1.6 million barrels of recoverable reserves; and in the Enriquillo basin, the original reserves are 246 million barrels and the recoverable reserves are 37 million barrels,” López detailed in the report.

He added, “These data tell us that across the four basins studied, there are potentially 498 million barrels of oil, of which 74.3 million barrels are recoverable.”
Refinery executives congratulated the research team led by Dr. Gregorio Rosario and composed of Vera Cedeño Pérez, Ricardo Reynoso Villafaña, Mario García González, Mauricio Vásquez, Claudia Acra, Rosill Rodríguez, Gian Caolo and Johnny Gregorio Cedeño.
This means that this new technical scientific report delves into a more rigorous phase in an encouraging way, defines the relevant aspects more clearly and provides a better view of the near-term prospects of this great endeavour.

Yamily said that while research had already been conducted in the country, “we can categorically say that the research we conducted at Refidomsa paints a profoundly optimistic picture and marks a turning point in this year-long quest in which “many hopes and even fantasies were sown among all Dominicans.”
He stressed that the results of the survey are proof of the commitment and determination of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, who “recommended the creation in 2022 of a unit in Refidomsa responsible for this work.”

“It is very important to highlight that this is the first exercise to clearly define the opportunities identified and give the value of in-situ and recoverable hydrocarbons in each basin of the country,” Lopez concluded.
