New Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schauf has denied there is racism in his cabinet and told Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders he will choose his words during an uncomfortable first parliamentary debate.
Opposition MPs have repeatedly called on political newcomer Schuff to respond to allegations of racism against cabinet ministers.
Wilders, who failed to win the trust of the new coalition to become prime minister himself, criticised Schouf’s response and said he would be “angry” and would not change his mind.

But I choose to put it in my own words… I am the prime minister of all the people of the Netherlands and I do not exclude anyone.”
Wilders immediately tweeted that he considered Schuff’s response “weak”. But when D66 leader Rob Jetten questioned him about the “train crash” debate, Schuff stressed that he was responsible for the coalition agreement.
Jetten also referred to a recent tweet by Liberal Asylum Minister Marjoryne Faber, who called MP Esma Lahla a “Labor hijab.” He asked Schuff to look her in the eyes and confirm he saw her as a human being.
Lakhla responded emotionally: “For the past two days, we have been discussing the headscarf issue. As a woman who wears a headscarf in parliament, I want to say: I wear a headscarf and it is a free choice… For all the girls who wear headscarves and are affected… This is your choice and you can achieve anything you want.”
